Spring Stirring
Donal Hord was a San Diego artist who contributed several sculptures and art pieces to this community. One characteristic of his work was that he used materials that were very hard and difficult to work, such as with the above sculpture called "Spring Stirring" made of diorite during 1947-1948. This sculpture is located at the Scripps Institute for Oceanography . Click here to see two other Hord sculptures I showed before and here for a list of more works around town.
Since I first saw the sculpture La Tehuana in Balboa Park's House of Hospitality courtyard, I've tried to get photos of other works by Donal Hord. The above photo is of Mourning Woman, a petite sculpture (a little under 5 feet tall) of carved granite that is located inside the Coronado Public Library. Click here to see my collection of photos of various sculptures by this artist.
I first showed you the sculpture La Tehuana by Donal Hord. Above is another fountain sculpture called Guardian of the Water by this San Diego artist and was dedicated to the city in 1939. Like La Tehuana, the above was made as part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) / Federal Art Project, a program that provided jobs for unemployed artists during the Great Depression. The building in the background is the County Administration Building.
Created in 1935 by San Diego sculptor Donal Hord, this gorgeously detailed stone fountain is called La Tehuana and is located in the courtyard of the House of Hospitality in Balboa Park. It was made as part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) / Federal Art Project, a program that provided jobs for unemployed artists during the Great Depression.
