SDSU & the WPA

Last month Alexandra posted a photo of the County Administration building that was built as part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). It got me thinking about what other projects were done in San Diego by the WPA. Our local public radio station KPBS did a short video on WPA projects in San Diego, and I decided to check out some of the places they showed. The WPA played a significant part in expanding San Diego State University and in the above photo you can see the WPA acronym stamped into one of the benches that proliferate the campus.

The giveaway is still in progress - check out the Elephant Odyssey post and leave your best guess.

I don't think many Americans are aware of the immensity of the projects that WPA was involved with...

I like this composition very much!

No need of swag here, but I know a bit about local WPA Arts projects. One of my favorites and easy to find is the decorative mural border at the downtown post office. Check out the rock work at Presidio park too. One of our libraries should have a record of the projects done here in San Diego.

Two nice big paintings are above the San Diego Historical Society museum on the wall by the cafe upstairs too.

The designers that worked with WPA really had enduring, economical, artful ideas, didn't they! Here is just one small example of great design built to LAST. I think so much of the enduring infrastructure of California was built by the WPA. I'm glad your local station covered it for your area.
Thanks for covering this campus, too, because I've had so many friends go to this school, but never visited myself. Wonderful to see!
