DMV...Sigh.

There are times when you just have to go to the DMV and wait in line...Times when you can't plan ahead and make an appointment online, thereby speeding the process up. Those times, when you have to go and take your chances, are the times when you spend some times staring at the backs of your citizens like above, or sitting in their hard, plastic chairs trying to figure out the system that they use for taking a number - how is it that the following numeric sequences used by the DMV are "in order" according to the computer at the DMV?
G024, G025, G026, F001, A009, C010, G027, G028, J003, F002...
How does that makes sense? Is there any way at all that one could predict future numbers? Yes, I spent too much time at the DMV today!

That's why I have AAA - it's worth it just to avoid those darn chairs.

As for the number sequence - I think your assumption that it is supposed to make sense may be faulty.

Ah the DMV. Bummer. My best story from the DMV is, before they had this numbering system, and after waiting in line endlessly, I saw some guy pay his bill with a bag of change! Hey, money is money so they couldn't say no even though they tried. Perfect payback.

First, the clerk who disperses th numbers does a sort of triage, and assigns you number to a group of windows who specialize in your type of problem or need. Then, each clerk may work at different speeds during the day, and certain customers are more time consuming [not ready, histrionic, demanding ]. There are many ways of life, and the DMV must get them all through th system. After each customer, and perhaps a moment of recovery, the clerk pushes a button and the next number is announced to go to that window.
I'm sorry they painted over the murals, but the annunciator is an improvement.

P.S. Have you noticed the male palm trees bloomed and now are dropping tiny florets on th street and sidewalks near Park & Madison ?
