Bear Flag
It is Memorial Day, so I thought I'd do some flag waving for you. You don't see the California flag as much as the US flag, but here it is flying high in front of a local bank. Our flag depicts the now extinct California Golden Bear.
Another mini-theme going on that I don't know about? Last week 4 blogs had pictures of McDonalds on the same day. Today all over America, it's flags. Conspiracy? I don't know...
Only in Berkeley is th mascot th "Golden Bear". The California bear was th GRIZZLY, (Ursus arctos subsp. horribilis) and pretty fierce they were. Before the mission at San Luis Obispo was founded [1772] hunting parties were sent down from Carmel [near Monterey] and took back thousands of pounds of bear meat, which kept the padres and soldiers alive for a year. Hi Rachel, thanks for stopping by. I missed the McDonalds theme - I wonder what that was all about! Thanks Richard. I wasn't sure which bear is actually on the flag, golden or grizzly, I read differing accounts - probably grizzly. Either one, they are either all gone or scarce.
