Here is a cute Craftsman style house in Hillcrest. Sadly, and as I'll show you tomorrow, this neighborhood has less and less residential homes and more and more apartments, condos, and businesses.

You don't have to dig far in Hillcrest to come across tons of those glacial boulders. They're extremely hard, almost like flint. By contrast, the same area has many deposits of sandstone -- much softer but death to any kind of horticulture. All over the world, using local rock as wall- or house-building material has been the traditional way of clearing the land and having something useful to show for it.
Hi Expat, funny you say that because over the weekend I passed by Fashion Valley Mall at Friars Rd & Ulric up to Linda Vista. There is a land mass falling apart there and more than once, after a good rain, I've seen people stopped there collecting the big rocks that come tumbling out on the road.
