I thought that this guy who was cruising along on Mission Bay was on some kind of special water toy, but it turns out he was balancing on his surfboard and pushing himself along with an oar.

Most people haven't seen the movie Johnny Lingo, but your picture reminds me of it!

This is a special type of surfboard that is made specific for this paddling. Its wider for balance and thicker than the customary surfboard and saw a recent resurgence in the islands and now trickling up to California. Surprisingly, the cost for these toys about $3000 - I thought about getting one until I found out the cost!
stand-up paddle (SUP) surfing is definitely getting more popular in SoCal, and some traditional surfers are not too happy about it. the larger board and better ability to see arriving waves allows SUP surfers to get "more than their fair share"....
