Rolled tacos

Next to the carne asada burrito, I think that rolled tacos (flautas) are probably the most popular Mexican food restuarant menu item. The variety of fillings can vary - I've seen ground beef, shredded beef, shredded chicken, and potato. A good cheap fattening meal of 5 tacos with guacamole, lettuce, cheese and salsa for only $3.45. These are from El Cuervo Mexican Restaurant where they do fried food right (and lots of other stuff too)!

Yummy! Funny, relating to your El Cuervo post of 4/7/06 - I followed the "El Cuervo" link to read that half of Hillcrest eats there and the other half at Bronx Pizza... where I had lunch today. We must have been on simlar tracks!

rolled tacos seem especially popular here in san diego. i've heard them called taquitos elsewhere. i believe el indio actually claims to have invented this fried delicacy. my favorite shop (cotija's) has fish, but i've never tried 'em. give me good old beef with shredded cheese and guac. hmmmmmm.....it is almost dinner time.....!

Hi and thanks for stopping by. Sorry, the photo doesn't due the rolled tacos justice. Zentmrs, I think that link was to www.mmm-yoso.typepad.com - that guy is a great SD food resource and I think he's right about El Cuervo & Bronx! Brent, I know what you're having for dinner! Yah, taquitos, that is probably what they call them in the frozen food section at the supermarket too.

I always thought that taquitos were rolled corn tortillas, and flautas were rolled flour tortillas. (The former are also called "roles tacos" by some Spanglish-speaking taquerias.)

I'm from San Diego but I live n the midwest now. There's nothing like going to a taco shop. The things they call taquitos taste nothing like our SD rolled tacos. I miss them & a taco shop is always my first stop when I come 2 SD

I'm from San Diego, now in Texas. I miss food like this. I can't find it any where here. I can't even get a proper bean and cheese burrito! Excuse me while I cry myself to sleep.
Some one please come here and open up a chain of Cali/Baja-Mex. Please!

I live in Michigan and I spent the summer of 1988 in San Diego. Mission Beach, La Jolla, Balboa Park all were great but what I still miss the most 20 years later are the rolled tacos found in this taco shop in National City. I'll be taking my family for a visit in a year or two and can't wait to hit the taco stands.

I got a Jones in my Bones!!! I moved to the DC metro area a little over 9 years ago & I haven't been back to my beloved home since!!! LOVE is an understatement of how I feel about my rolled tacos, on the styrofoam tray neatly wrapped in aluminum foil...OMG I miss San Diego!!!! At least I found this blog & I don't feel so greedy...or alone knowing how you all LOVE these cheap, greasy, crispy SD delicacies--flautas, not quite...taquitos, nope.that's not it!!! It's all about the ROLLED TACOS for life!!!! :)
