The Alibi

Even though the sign says, "The best kept secret in town", I think this bar is not so secret anymore. It is considered a dive bar but has become popular with the younger crowd, maybe because of the cheap beer - their Big Dipper Bud draft is around $3.00 for 23 ounces (about 1.5 pints). But, shhh, don't tell anyone else!

I think you've missed the point that The Alibi's real cache is as a longstanding popular lesbian bar - an alternative for gay women to the many bars that cater to gay males in the area.

Well I never said that "younger crowd" and "liking cheap beer" can't refer to lesbians! You are right to say that it is not a gay male bar, but I guess it should probably be considered gender neutral as I know plenty of straight people who go there and in this article they claim it is not a gay bar.

Oh Felicia-
You know how to pull the heart strings! Back in the day, Dippers were 1.50, and a quarter played 6 songs on the jukebox (they allowed you to bring your own 45's to put in the rotation---Kiss "I Was Made for Lovin' You"). I can certainly attest to the diversity--old ladies with walkers, middle-aged businessmen, and cute rock-a-billy boys in tight t-shirts, and a very comfortable place to bring our gay boyfriends. . . haven't really seen or heard of the lesbian cache, maybe something more recent? Not many places like that in SD. In the last several years they have remodeled, and it's not as seedy as it used to be...still my favorite bar in SD.
Luv,
Susu

The Alibi has changed from what I remember. It didn't used to have a grill or the best kept secret in town sign. It didn't have windows in the old days or a fresh coat of red paint. It did have cheap drinks, pool tables, and plenty of cigarette smoke.
