Mushroom house & funicular

Here is another view further south showing what is called the "mushroom house". This private beach house has its own funicular (cable car) up the cliffs where there are million dollar homes at the top overlooking the ocean. The funicular is no longer functioning and anything of its kind would be strictly prohibited today as we have a special Commission to protect California's coastline.

I lived in Southern California for almost 10 years and was never aware of this house. I can't wait to google it!!

It looks a little strange, futuristic set there amongst all those rocks. I'm surprised they were allowed to build it there.

that has to be one of the most crazy located homes EVER! how did you even find this place - it looks like you would not be able to see it except from the ocean with that tall cliff - nice post!!!

Hello - Actually the funicular is fully functional. I rode in it last week at a party thrown by the owner, who incidentally is a super nice guy, and I was googling around for good pics thereafter. Great pictures btw.

my girlfriend Laurenne went to parties at this house in the late 60's when she was 5 or 6 and once she and her mom and dad were the last ones up before the next group got stuck halfway up the cliff in the funicular car for 5 hours!

2/2/09 - Thanks to both Anon commenters and to the Web Urbanist for linking here. It is good to know that the funicular is still working. It would be fun to take a ride, but definitely not fun getting stuck!

Doesn't seem to be in use. I have friends that run by it all the time and have never seen anyone in there or any lights turned on.

Absolutely still working. Was there today, and saw the tram heading up the cliff.

This isn't the owner's primary "house". The primary house is up the cliff. This was simply a little getaway or party place.
