Dolphins Checking Out Dogs

Normally a post about Sea World, in my opinion, would be a bit... well, lame. Eveyone knows that there's a Sea World in San Diego, and what it's about.

However, I really wanted to post about this off-the-cuff animal interaction I witnessed while there recently. This dog was one of about 8 that were on a walk in the park, between performing in their own show.

Not one dolphin was near the viewing area of the dolphin pool until the dogs showed up. Then suddenly every single dolphin was front & center in front of the glass checking out the dogs. I also think it's interesting to note that the dogs pretty much didn't get why the crowd was gathering to watch the interaction - they each had an expression like, "what? huh? What's everyone oooh-ing & awww-ing about? I don't get it." lol.

I love this photo! And not your typical Sea World photo either. This "dolphin loves dog behavior" reminds me of how kids "sense" and love other kids.

As a 'doggy' person - apart from my DP blogs, I find this fascinating. Very intersting post and good photo. Thankyou. Animals have a way of communicating that is way beyond us.

Don't you wonder what the dolphins are thinking or saying about the dog? I would or I do. I am always asking myself how wildlife communicates. I think they are actually better at it than we are. I love dogs so this is a special post for me.

Thank you for coming to my blog and for your comment there.

I find it fascinating, too. Will do some googling about the dog/dolphin interaction...

I wish I'd been there to see it and I too think animals communicate very well.

This really is a great photo. I've never had much luck attracting dolphins to my corner when we're at Sea World. Perhaps I just need a dog with me.

What a great shot, and how terrific you could be there to capture it! Also love the idea that the dogs get to go for an 'unwind stroll' between shows.

Felicia! I love reading your posts - you add a personal experience to the image that is reallly entertaining and fun to read - its interesting and something I would not have know if you had not mentioned! Amazing how curious the dolphins are of the dog - from time to time, I see dolphins as I paddle in the ocean - they are very beautiful creatures and so is your that dog! You've made a respectable image of Sea World =)

I love the picture but more its description you gave us. It's fascinating to think that -maybe- animals may interact between themselves.

This is interesting. Did the handlers give an explanation?

It is easy to understand why they are so much interesting about the dogs, they are easy to teach stupid movement for the pleasure of humans.
