Your tomorrow

Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar is a 24,000 acre military installation in San Diego. Click here for a short history of the facility. I don't want to see another 21,500 US men and women in Iraq. If we continue at the pace we are going, what will our tomorrow look like?

Miramar is the home of the famous "Top Gun" training school. Check out this aerial view and note the stubby little runway designed to give the pilot jocks their first experience of landing on something as small as a carrier deck.

For at least 25 years, San Diego has been searching for the best way to expand its airport facilities (the international airport is scarily close to downtown, and unable to expand). One idea is to make the Miramar air base "joint use", meaning that there'd be a civilian airport on the same site. Not surprisingly, the USAF says this will happen only over its dead body.

Another fancy idea is to expand a private airport known as Brown Field, very close to the Mexican frontier. Right across the frontier is the Tijuana airport, and some planners fantasise about creating a joint US/Mexican mega-airport. This will only happen over the dead bodu of the Border Patrol. We do have problems here.....

Do you think the hawk sitting on top of the sign is a real one or a fake? Airports often put up fake birds of prey to discourage smaller birds that might get sucked into jet engine intakes....

Stu, thanks for providing the info on the airport issue. The hawk is real - I think it adds a nice touch to the photo.

I like the hawk too. And I don't want to send more men and women to Iraq either.
