Mario's de La Mesa

Requested by Aaron G and recommended as the best Mexican food in San Diego. We had the tamale, the carnitas, and the rolled tacos. Once we cut into the tamale it suddenly became very difficult to work the camera as the anticipation and hunger took over. Here is the tamale:
The portions were large, the prices were good, and the service was excellent. Here is the carnitas (pork):
My favorite was the rolled tacos, unfortunately the photo didn't come out so well. At many of the fast food Mexican restaurants here you will find rolled tacos with guacamole on the menu usually 3 - 5 for under $4.00, which is a great cheap lunch. But, they usually taste like they pulled them out of the freezer. Mario's rolled tacos were delicioso! The food was above average and I'll get back to you on whether it is the best in SD once I do some more eating.

Felicia, thanks for making Mario’s your “Mexican Food of the Week”! So glad to hear that you enjoyed the food. You’ll have to try the carne asada tacos (1 taco grande is really 2 tacos). On Sundays (and Saturdays too, I think) they have complimentary bunellos.

I used to go to Marios 3 times a week (I worked down the street) but I’ll just have to enjoy from thousands of miles away.

Thanks again!

(I’m definitely linking this one!)

I too used to eat at Mario's several times a week. But, alas, I moved to the East Coast, where I have not found any Mexican food that can come close to Mario's. It gets my vote as the best Mexican food around. I'm moving back to La Mesa this summer and Mario's will be the first place I go. Sorry relatives and friends. If you want to see me, I'll be at Mario's.

Aaron G. and Jodi: I'll eat some carne asada for you. Can't wait till you can join us again at Mario's. I'd send some in the mail, but I don't think you would enjoy it quite as much.

If anyone at Mario's happens to read this, please consider giving me some type of discount in exchange for my unqualified praise of your restaurant. Maybe I should get a VIP card that qualifies me for 20% off the entire menu and free Margaritas on the weekends. Maybe I could start a Mario's fan club and bring tour buses from the East Coast to Mario's so they can experience real Mexican food. We could also fly in people from Australia for the experience. What do you think, Mario's?

Ohhhh, slurp! I'm a Californian (until ten years ago when life took me other places, but will always be a Californian at heart), and good Mexican food is what I miss the most. They just can't seem to manage it in the Washington, DC area. That looks GRRRRREAT!!!!!

Thanks for your comments everyone. I'll be sure to go to Mario's again, but probably can't make it several times a week. (Mexican food is not exactly "diet" food.) I'll get the carne asada and report back to you with photos. Hmmm, maybe I should start a Mexican food mail order business! Aaron, I'll also go to a Padres game sometime this summer and post pics.

Maybe instead of a Mario's Fan Club we should start a Mario's Support Group (for addicts like yours truly).

"Hi, my name is Aaron, and I'm a Mexican-Food-aholic."

Since we found MARIO'S. it has come to the top of our list for Mexican food. Try the chili relleno or the carne asada (my daughter-in-law's favorite).

The photos were awesome.

Sounds like a new religion to me...

Kara - you describe the food as "heavenly."

Brenda - yours sounds like a testimony given in a church service: "Since I found Marios my life has never been the same..."

Get your praise on!

I love Mexican food and if you want "THE BEST" you have to go to Mario's De La Mesa. I had the taco enchilada with fried jalepenos and everything was so delicious, that we all stuffed ourselves and finished our plates. I have tried Mexican food almost everywhere in San Diego and this one is by far the best I've had...

I currently live in Maine, and would kill for a bowl of Mario's menudo. Someone pass me the lemon, cilantro and onions.
