Cliff crash

From Stu: At 3:25 pm last Tuesday, April 24th, tons of sandstone sloughed off Sunset Cliffs opposite Osprey Street and tumbled down just north of what the locals call "No Surf Beach". Quite surprising that this non-event even made news, considering nobody was hurt, and erosion of the cliffs has been going on for eons, although runoff down trails and watering in the neighborhood to the east have sped the process up. This is what the resulting debris pile looks like, from Luscomb's Point. Photo by Craig Barilotti, a friend who lives on Osprey.

Wonder how long it'll be before those million-dollar mansions up there end up as debris on the beach?......e

Erosion - an unstoppable force. I am struck by just how similar this looks to Sydney - the houses, the sandstone cliff...

I wouldn't like to own those houses up there. You could wake up one morning swimming!

How refreshing to see that news was made with someone getting hurt/damaged. I guess it was a boring news day.

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

Have a great day!

in this area, the homes are not quite as close to disaster as it might appear; there's a city-maintained road between them and the cliffs. having said that, i'd still rather be a block or two back from the front row. in the left side of the photo, you can see tons of rock rip-rap which the city dumps onto the beach to try to protect the cliffs from wave action -- a shortsighted approach which destroys the beach. the only long-term solution is managed retreat.

Felicia, Do you know who put up the peace sign on the big rock near these cliffs? I saw it the other week on a run and loved it. We tried to figure out who climbed and put it up there.

Thanks to Stu & Craig for sharing and to everyone for stopping by. For those of you that know Sunset Cliffs, I've always wanted to live in the big pink house. Anne, I haven't seen the peace sign but it sounds cool. May be we can get a photo of it...
